Center for Politics and Race in America

The Sheila Y. Oliver Center for Politics and Race in America (CPRA) at Rutgers–Newark is a hub for students and the wider community to come together in dialogue, collaboration, and action. Named to honor the legacy and continue the mission of Newark’s own former Lt. Governor Sheila Y. Oliver, the Center advances equity and access through research, education, public service training, and civic programming.

The CPRA amplifies voices too often unheard creating a place where students can gather, speak openly, and build their own political experiences. Through civic pathways and hands-on opportunities, the Center empowers students and communities to lead, engage, and create change. Its location and spirit foster honest conversation about politics and race, giving students room to imagine what political spaces can become and to leave a lasting impact in the communities they serve.
